The Irish Dexter has its origin in the Celtic Ireland. It is one of the oldest known races and can be traced back to the Stone Age.
In Denmark the Dexter was imported in the mid 1980’s from 10 of the finest herds in England. Since then the Danish Dexter Association has put a great effort into developing a breeding programme giving Denmark some of the finest Dexter cattle in the world.
The Danish Dexter Association has developed a standard for the Danish Dexter, which emphasizes the importance of keeping the Dexter cattle’s special characteristics.
A fully grown bull weighs approx 600 kg and measures 111-114 cm. The cow weighs about 350 kg and measures 101-104 cm.
Each year a number of animals and semen is exported to herds outside Denmark and breeders from all over the world keep an eye on the Danish market.
